It’s very normal to start with keywords “the best ….” when one is planning his holiday trips. Most people do, and so did we when we planned our trip to Lisbon, Portugal last month. But guess what, at the end of the day second or maybe third level best of something might be good for you and the experience might be even unforgettable once passed.
And that’s exactly what happened to us in Lisbon. Pastel de nata is a Portuguese traditional egg tart pastry which tourists are recommended to try when they visit Lisbon, if not a must in some of the articles we found on the internet. You go to TripAdvisor, and there you will find people arguing which one is the best, but you’ll spot one or two which are getting the highest ratings or reviews.
However, when we were there we hate to see the queues. So for the whole week, everyday, we had Pastel de nata from unknown cafes and they were all taste awesome and cheaper. Plus traveling with a baby helps a lot with this strategy as we always got space to sit, relax, and enjoy the cake plus cup of coffee without feeling pressure to went off as soon possible.
So, back to the title of this post, if you ask me where to find the best pastel de nata in Lisbon, I would answer “look for those which are not too touristy, many locals come and go to that cafes, and most importantly cafes which gives you comfortable relaxing experience”. Because for me and my family, enjoying pastel de nata was like enjoying our relaxing tea/coffee time as family.
